Ramble Ramble: Mumble Bumble Bench Bench Party Party

So with the end of October approaching and Halloween just around the corner, I’m excited about celebrating with our beloved newborn that is just over one month old. We won’t let any of the things going on stop us from having a good time, but we will be taking the necessary precautions. I compare it to waking up in the morning. Even that is risky business.

Last week I posted a semi-hiatus message about lessening the frequency of posts on this blog and that was my every intention ( I’m a little coocoo like that sometimes ). At the time I felt like I was getting nowhere with my writing efforts and spending too much time on posting. Once I start something, I feel like the ball rolling on Indiana Jones:

I am BB. BB is me, I roll along after I start on something. Let’s call it a gift.

On top of that, in my efforts to come up with ideas about what to post on this blog, my mind turned everything it could find into an idea about a blog post, which is probably just a gift in a bad disguise. Unless you are full-time blogger, it is not well. I like to promote wellness.

See: Blogging: Enjoyable Hobby, or Cruel Addiction? @ RU Creative Blogging FA13 regarding blogging addiction warning signs.

It’s one of the addictive qualities of this medium, along with quick gratification of comments and likes vs. the long grueling work that it takes to write a book. Make no mistake, I’m falling in love with the process of writing a book all over again, even more so than when I wrote book #1, as I felt a bit scrambled at times with it, just to get the idea out there.

Speaking of writing, I haven’t done a promotional post for quite some time. So, I will sneak it in here. A big part of me honestly doesn’t like self-promoting at all, but an even bigger part of me will wail, holler and be a kicking, screaming child in the corner if it feels like my work is going too un-noticed without doing something about it. So where am I at with LJ and Rom book #2? I’m somewhere between an eighth and a quarter of the way through writing the manuscript, which is way more perfect than a manuscript ever should be. It cannot be rushed. I feel really good about it. My writing has evolved. I know there is a ton of work left to go. I left book #1 in quite of a cliffhanger, but not without the main problem of the plot being resolved. It was quite of a challenge for me to work the story of book #2 out of that cliffhanger / trap, but it is heading in a solid direction. Questions will be answered, but such is life when we have some questions answered, bigger questions will reveal themselves and cloud our satisfaction of having a simple answer for a simple question. The dust shall settle.

Bonus Content: Unreleased Preface for LJ and Rom Book #1:

There are pivotal points in each one of our lives where everything suddenly changes. No matter how ordinary or extraordinary your life is, it happens to everyone and the thing about it is, most times you never see it coming. Boom, you were flipping burgers and next thing you know you draw the winning Lotto numbers at the Quickie Mart. Or way worse, you wake up one day and your whole family is just gone either by abandonment or death. Sometimes, it’s just not as extreme like getting a job offer and moving to a different city. Whatever the case may be, good or bad, these pivotal points are something that just happens, like a slap on the face on a very cold winter day. It hurts or it might feel good, but you have to just deal with it the best way you know how.

I’ve had my fair share of these pivotal points, and just like the modern day cowboys LJ and Rom, I’m starting to learn the art of somewhat forgetting about the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ perceptions of my circumstances and just roll with the punches. So, I hope you appreciate their longevity and ‘get to the point’ attitude.

I’ve taken up many different interests in my life. I do love racing, guns, Heavy Metal and fictional monsters, all of which this book are about. Racing is in my blood. My father – and best Dad in the world – won the speedboat world championship race in France in 1969. In my teenage years he was my pit crew in which I was the driver in dirt track go kart racing. It has been somewhat a dream of mine to race rally cars, so LJ and Rom encompass that dream, rebelliously by taking to the open road in a rally race car.

I try to be as unbiased as humanly possible to everything that comes my direction which leads me into the different life journeys that I’ve had so far, and here’s to many more. This book was born out of a deep place in my heart and mind. It is my first published book and God permitting, not my last. Have as much fun reading it as I did dreaming and writing about it. I love you just for picking it up. —S.D. McKinley

Not very many people have read How LJ and Rom Saved Heavy Metal, but to the ones that are following me, have read the book and want to provide input, please see this as a chance to do so ( although, it is always welcome ), even if it’s negative. Questions that you want answered or about character development or backstory, etc. Let me be clear, I absolutely will not rely on my readers for input to write a book, but I will listen to what you have to say and if it makes sense I might hear you. This is from all that is good. My main motivator for writing a book is doing something that is hefty and worthwhile. If you think about it, we spend time doing a lot of little things. Why not take some time to do something big? Something that takes more than a couple of days to do. Something that requires dedication and thoroughness. If you are interested in a physical ARC of How LJ and Rom Saved Heavy Metal, let me know, but I only currently have two ready to ship with the new cover ( Please do not put your mailing address in the comments, send it to me through the contact form ). I have about 45 copies with the old cover, so if you have any ideas about how to get those into the hands of someone who wants to read, let me know ( the old cover is completely out of print, forever ). And, if you are outside the USA, I will see if I can work something out.

As for reviewing other author’s books, that’s not going anywhere. I’m going to try to do two more short story reviews this month, one from The Books of Blood Vol. 1 and one more for the grotesquerie before I get back into reviewing full books. Reviewing short stories is somewhat of a great study for me, paying very close attention to story elements. And last, but not least, a review for Lee Hall’s Darke Awakening is coming, hopefully before the end of the month, but that self-imposed deadline is looking shifty, honestly. After all the horror reading in October, November will bring some SciFi and other misc genres of book reviews.

I hope you enjoyed my ramble. It’s a great opportunity for me to be genuine with you guys.

As stated in last week’s post, no Friday Fun Links for a while, but here is an uplifting song for you. Do me a favor, if you don’t like metal core or heavy music, don’t listen to it. I respect that. But, I do hope that at least the lyrics can give you some positive energy and inspiration on this lovely Friday:

[Verse 1]
Rise inside
Free your mind
Raise your fist
To signify
We stand in defiance
Of hatred and deception
If I stand alone
I’ll fight for you

[Chorus 1]
The time has come to
Make a difference
Why have we forsaken love
The time has come to
Raise our voices
So rise up and fight with me

[Verse 2]
Embrace what we have
It might be the last time
In this life we will rise (In this life we will rise)
If we find the strength to unify

[Verse 1]
Rise inside
Free your mind
Raise your fist
To signify
We stand in defiance
Of hatred and deception
If I stand alone
I’ll fight for you

[Chorus 1]
The time has come to
Make a difference
Why have we forsaken love
The time has come to
Raise our voices
So rise up and fight with me

[Verse 2]
Embrace what we have
It might be the last time
In this life we will rise (In this life we will rise)
If we find the strength to unify

[Bridge]
Hatred is a weakness
You become the victim
I believe love will overcome

[Chorus 2]
The time has come to
Make a difference
Why have we forsaken one another
The time has come to
Raise our voices
So rise up and fight with me
The time has come to
Raise our voices
So rise up and fight with me

[Outro]
The time has come (The time has come)
The time has come (The time has come)
The time has come to rise inside, rise inside
