If you were paying attention to my Friday Fun Links #7, I posted a link about a new Twitch and Steam sensation called Phasmophobia ( this game is currently PC only ). I purchased the early release game to see what all the rage is about and intended on doing a full review ( should be easy, right? ), but as a matter of factly, I didn’t even make it past the training section because it scared the lights out of me and I couldn’t figure out how to follow the steps in the TV slideshow.
Phasmophobia is a 4 player online co-op psychological horror. Paranormal activity is on the rise and it’s up to you and your team to use all the ghost hunting equipment at your disposal in order to gather as much evidence as you can.Phasmophobia on Steam.
This game presents an interesting array of variables:
- You may play in VR mode or not VR mode.
- Ghost hunting online coop, up to 4 players.
- You roll up on scene in a ghost hunting truck and you have legit ghost hunting tools.
- There are different kinds of ghosts ( more on this in a minute ), you have five minutes to use your tools to identify the type of ghost, based on the evidence and to stop it before it becomes hostile.
- The ghosts can hear you through your microphone. You might taunt it with what you say.
I exited the truck, entered the house and proceeded to explore a bit and then read the TV for instructions which showed me the controls. If I remember correctly, “SHIFT” is suppose to make you run, but I saw a negligible difference in walking speed. “J” pulls up the journal:
Ghost Hunting: Survivors Guide:
The journal displays core elements in the game along with the fascinating list of different types of ghosts, tools, evidence lists and some mysterious photos. This is where my threshold for needing to be prepared put me in somewhat of a “oh crap” stance. Now, I feel like I should do some rituals on my own before jumping into a ghost investigation.

I continued on with the slideshow on the TV and it proceeded to tell me some training steps. Don’t ask me why I was pointing the flashlight at the TV.
( Above ) My attempt at setting up the video camera for step #1. WHAT?! It doesn’t have double sided sticky tape on it? And it won’t let me stick it to the wall?? 🤣
I never did figure out how to position the video camera for step #1 and that is where I ended the game ( maybe I needed the tripod? ). My overall thoughts for this is that it is a very promising game and I can’t wait for my first non-training ghost hunt. I’m not much for playing on-line with other people. I compare it to stretching before a work out, it just doesn’t pan out well for me as it adds a lot of extra coordination and planning to an otherwise simple experience. Although I am sure the online element adds some interesting scenarios. Thankfully, the game can be played solo.
Guys, until next time – may you find all the happiness that your life can fit in it’s happy spot – S.D. McKinley
