I read the first book in this series titled Open Evening and I can tell you that this writer ( Hall ) has evolved. Toward the beginning of the book, with the rocks and the lake, it reminded me of lofty, floaty feelings I got when reading Storm Constantine’s The Ghosts of Blood and Innocence and while Constantine holds that feeling through her whole book, Hall deviates and moves onto other atmospheric feelings of epic battle scenes and neat accentuation such as secret labs, government agents, supernatural puzzles with pentagrams and a conundrum of imbalance that a slew of different kinds of monsters can bring that includes vampires, witches and other abominations along with vampiric transformations.
You might be wondering, or you might not care, either way I’m going to explain anyways why I am featuring this book release. When I first published How LJ and Rom Saved Heavy Metal I wanted to connect with fellow indie authors, and not just with any indie author, one that was active in their presence on the internet, similar in genre, ( some kind of speculative fiction ), and active in other ways besides just self promotion. To be honest, I feel like if you are nothing less than the likes of the most famous authors, you should give us more than just news about your works in progress. Let us into get to know you as a person. Long story short, Mr. Lee Hall was one of the first indie authors I have connected with along with others that aren’t quite receptive as he. We are very busy people and we mostly stick to our guns, but I look up to this guy. So whether you are or aren’t into the indie book scene, ( I know a lot of you follow this blog because I have been connecting with other book review blogs and not just indie books, publishing house reviewers as well ), and if you have just a small grain of curiosity – GO BUY THIS BOOK. I mean, this guy has put his blood, sweat and tears into this thing and all he is asking is for around about the cost of a cup of coffee and I guarantee you can’t digest the book as fast as you would your cup of joe. Check out his Dark Awaking Release announcement and give his blog a follow to see what it’s like to be in this emerging indie book scene.
I am adding this to my Halloween Reading List and you can definitely expect a review coming sometime for Darke Awakening by Lee Hall, and it’s arrived just in time for the Halloween season.
Guys, until next time – may you find all the happiness that your life can fit in it’s happy spot – S.D. McKinley
